Our mission is educate creatives, students and attorneys on new developments in Fashion Law; conduct high quality, independent research; and based on this research, to provide recommendations that advance three goals:

1. Strengthen intellectual property laws to protect American designers;
2. Foster economic opportunity of American fashion designers; and
3. encourage innovation in the field of fashion.

Trademark attorney Mariessa Terrell will lead a discussion on new developments in trademark law with a special emphasis on using trademarks to protect, promote and preserve creative projects.

Mariessa Terrell is a fashion attorney, brander and founder of SBC Law Group (Fashion Trademarks) and the Fashion Law and Policy Center with over 10 years experience providing intellectual property law services to clients as diverse as Lockheed Martin Corp. and Gloria Gelfand Marketing Solutions (Escada, Guido Lombardi etc).

Mariessa endeavors to make the trademark registration process simple and affordable by selecting, searching and registering trademarks for a flat fee. Prior to starting her own firm, Mariessa worked as Trademark Examining Attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and helped to register thousands of fashion brands including, Revlon, L'oreal, Estee Lauder, Balenciaga, Chanel, Dooney and Burke, Avon and countless others.

In April 2007, Mariessa drafted legislation (Bill 17-173) to create a Commission on Fashion Arts and Events in DC. Mayor Adrian Fenty signed the bill into law in April 2008. Mariessa is a graduate of Howard University School of Law, writes a fashion law and lifestyle blog entitled, Yoo Hoo Darling (www.yoohoodarling.com) and serves as coordinator for Charming By Design, a fashion camp sponsored by the High Tea Society, a mentoring program for DC girls (www.highteasociety.org).
